Horror Trailer Analysis (Class): Cloverfield

Horror Trailer Analysis

Name of film: Cloverfield       Year Released: 2008

Genre of trailer: Thriller, Sci-fi      Your mark: 8/10

The trailer starts off at a surprise party for a guy who is leaving town. Everything is going well until a noise hits and shakes the building causing a power cut and everybody to go outside to see what’s going on. This is when rocks come from the sky smashing into the building causing everybody to evacuate.

This is a scene trailer which I think works well as it grabs the audience’s attention make them think what will happen after this scene. The handheld camera is a good affect as it makes it seem more like real life so the audience can relate to it. What they do in this trailer is not show the monster causing all this damage which again is good as it makes the audience want to see the film just to find out what the monster look like. At the end of the trailer the camera is on a guy who says “tonight’s going to be the best night ever” talking about the party but the trailer implies that it’s talking about the disaster that is going to happen that night.

Because this is a scene trailer you don’t get a lot of the story or know what the film is really about. This type of trailer is going to be the one I use because I think it gives a better affect not letting the audience know too much about the film as I think it will make them want to see it more if you put enough information in it so people watch the trailer like it but not know too much of the film making them want to watch it.

Film review: Land of the Dead

Film Review

Film title: Land of the dead                                               Director: George A. Romero

Year of Production: 2005                                                    Genre: Horror, action, thriller

Brief Plot Outline: The zombies have taken over the world, in America the living have built a walled in city to keep the dead out. Events take a turn for the worst as a revolution plans to overthrow the city leadership and the zombies are turning into more advanced creatures. This shows how George Romero plays with stereotypes because in most zombie films the zombies are slow and stupid but he’s turned this around as the zombies in land of the dead are more advanced learning how to use weapons.

Which two scenes impressed you the most? Why?: The first scene that impressed me the most was the scene where a girl is trapped in the cage having to fight off two zombies just for the pleasure of the crowd who had become just as inhumane as the zombies feeding off the flesh of human torture. This scene shows how the end of the world has caused humanity to become evil and causing them to deal with the fate of the earth in their own way, in this case it’s seeing other humans suffer. The next part of this scene is where Riley is after the dwarf who is eventually shot by Charlie a simpleton who also flips a stereotype as he is a really good shot and can handle himself. The second scene that most impressed me was when Cholo as a zombie is going after Kaufman. This scene builds a lot of tension as Kaufman is almost killed by the black zombie leader, and the film makes it seem like Kaufman is going to survive but when Cholo appears you know that he will be killed as its part of Cholo’s revenge and George Romero has made the audience hate Kaufman. The audience would be more pleased with the fact that Cholo as a Zombie kills Kaufman.

How has watching this film helped you understand this genre of filmmaking? Which features on the genre checklist did you spot in the film? When? How?: There is a lot of blood and gore (body horror) in Land of the dead one of the more graphic shots of body horror is when a soldier gets his face ripped off by a zombie. This is a really good affect which I would like to use in my horror trailer but will not as our trailer isn’t a zombie film and I don’t think it was look as good as the effect in Land of the dead. Another really good effect is when a zombies head flicks from his back hanging on his neck to bite one of the characters in the car. Part of this horror is too have a lot of creepy locations to add suspense one of them is the bridge, as it is dark, foggy and full with zombies. The darkness of the whole film connotes misery and horror as the world is coming to an end as people try to survive the horror of it all. There is a lot of quick cuts and collision cutting as all the civilians are running through the central main after the zombies have broken in to destroy the human’s new way of life.

Which aspects of the film would you like to include in your own trailer? Why?: I would like to use the body horror effects as it makes people feel uncomfortable and makes them not want watch but they feel they have to. I would also like to add the collision cutting as this style of camera work builds suspense and scares the audience. I would also like to add the aspect of action into my trailer as I feel it gives it more excitement and you can build up to it adding more suspense.

Which aspects of the film would you like to avoid in your own trailer? : I would like to avoid the trailer being too dark like this film, I think darkness does make it more grubby and scary but I think you need to add a safe place where you know the characters are not going to get hurt where it all begins.

What was the best aspect / more enjoyable moment in the film? Why? Can you recreate this in your own film? How? : One of the more enjoyable parts of the film was the scene where zombies have broken into the central main and ripping apart the people and destroying their home (their safe place). This wouldn’t be easy to recreate as you would need a lot of make-up and a lot of people which would be a very hard task to organise with such a small budget. It could be done with less people and a different scene to use it in my trailer it could be a lot of the people chasing down our main character in our trailer.

How does the film show the influence of its “auteur” director? How does it show the directors filmmaking style and soul? Give examples of three scenes from the movie that show their auteur style? : George A Romero shows his auteur style in this film by making us look at zombies in different ways trying to make the audience feel sorry for them and in a way want them to succeed in taking over, this shows Romero’s style to flip stereotypes. Most films directed by George A Romero are zombie horrors so when you see that he is a director of a film you can immediately tell what it is going to be like. Also the zombie leader is black, again showing his anti-racism, and one of the heroes is slightly physically deformed but a very nice character. The people in charge are portrayed as greedy and selfish and only upper class people can live in the central main building this showing Romero’s anti-consumerist values.

How does the film reflect its institutional point or historical context? Analyse two scenes/events that reflect the time which the film was made. : The film shows that the reason these people have turned into these creatures is because of some sort of virus and at the time that the film was made there were things like bird flu and all different sorts of illnesses which would therefore scare the audience into thinking this could be real. The film shows how higher classes will have a better life even if the world is ending.

Plot Details

Keith is an ex-cop who kills domestic abusing men due to previous experiences in his life. To do this, he has an ‘insider’ who still works for the police, and gives him information on who has been convicted or suspected of domestic abuse. Keith then proceeds to kidnap, take home and tie up in his shack, torture, and then finally kill his victims. Eventually the police find out that the insider is giving Keith information to commit these murders and set up a false lead that the insider gives to Keith, setting him up and finally capturing him.

Positive Responses From Other Class Members

The class seemed to like the fact that Keith has a motif which is backed up by past experiences. They liked that he had a sadistic edge to him, yet was still made out to be almost a good guy due to the nature of the people that he killed. They also approve of the realism factor of the film; how the overall subject of the film is something that people could relate to and imagine happening. They suggested an improvement to the ending of the film, where Keith turns himself in as he is disgusted by his own actions. 

Negative Responses From Other Class Members

The class said that we should be careful about how we get the theme of domestic abuse across, as how it can be a very powerful subject, it can also be very risky if done in bad taste and could offend the audience. They suggested that Keith’s past should be emphasised in the film more, how flashbacks could occur to show his father abusing his mother, which then gave him the motif to do the killings in the nature that he does.

Name of film: The possession                                          Year released: 2012

Genre of trailer: Horror                                                     Your mark: 8/10

The trailer starts with a Dad coming to get his kids to stay with him for the weekend. While they’re there it shows them going to somebodies garden sale which at this point is where the girl finds a box that she wants her dad to buy for her. They bring in home and the dad comes to the conclusion that whoever made the box didn’t want people to open it. Eventually it gets opened causing strange things to happen to the girl and her family.

The trailer builds a lot of suspense and leaves the audience wanting know what this box and why it’s causing all these problems. There is well placed close ups off the girl eating her breakfast to quick and there is eleven quick cuts from her to her dad really showing how this girl has changed. The music in the background works really well as it’s not too loud but it gives it a really creepy affect with the silent whispering as if they are saying something religious and maybe giving the audience an idea that this box might have something to do with the devil. The music builds up further on in the trailer to build tension and start to make the trailer more exciting.

The trailer could have added more action to it to make it more exciting and really grab the audience’s attention. There is so many quick cuts that it could confuse the audience to what the film is about.

Film Review: Zombieland

Film Review

 

Film Title: Zombieland                                                                     Director: Ruben Fleischer

Year of production: 2009                                                              Genre: Horror, action, Comedy

Brief plot outline: In early 21^st century Zombies have taken over America. A shy inexperienced college student is looking for his parents in Ohio on his travels he meets a man named Tallahassee who seeks Twinkies to eat. Later on they meet two young girls called Wichita and little rock who trick them twice and take their car and guns. The girls then decide to stick with the two guys to get to an amusement park.

Which two scenes impressed you the most? Why? : The first scene that I enjoyed the most was the end scene mainly because of all the action which is made better by the quick montage edits which created an exciting scene. This scene was quite suspenseful because the girls were close to dying the suspense was created well because of all the collision cutting from the girls to the men. The next scene that I enjoyed was the supermarket scene because of the body horror where Tallahassee hits the zombies with a baseball bat and a banjo and then the use of restricted narration when he goes to cut up the zombie makes the film seem a bit less gory. The use of close ups is good as it shows Tallahassee expressions and a close up of him killing the zombies.

How has watching this film helped you understand this genre of filmmaking? Which features on the genre checklist did you spot in the film? When? How? : The film uses a lot of body horror but in the supermarket scene there’s a bit of restricted narration. The gore used is mainly on from the zombies which show in the supermarket scene as one of the zombies when hit spits out a lot of blood. There are quick moving monsters used in the film as the zombies run fast and are lethal. In other films like Dawn of the Dead (1979) the zombies are a lot slower so on their own they’re not affective but as a big group they are. The male heroes are Columbus and Tallahassee. Columbus isn’t a stereotypical male hero as he’s more of a shy nerdy kid but he knows the right thing to do in a dangerous situation whereas Tallahassee is strong, confident and knows how to handle a weapon. Violence and fear of death works well in this film as there is always something to be scared because a zombie could pop out from anywhere. This is displayed well when Bill Murray is killed, because when he has a fear of death so he disguises himself as a zombie which then causes him to be killed. This film has an open ending as it looks like there could be another film after the first one because there are still a lot of zombies left and all the main characters survived.

Which aspects of the film would you like to include in your own trailer? Why? In my own trailer I would like to include some of the body horror techniques that Zombieland uses for example the zombie spitting blood was a really good affect, but I wouldn’t use too much gore as it can make the trailer boring. I also think using action in horror films makes them more exciting because there is the tension of a horror film and fighting of an action film.

Which aspects of the film would you like to avoid in your own trailer? Why? I would like to avoid the fact that none of the main characters died or got hurt, usually in a zombie film at least one person gets bitten and the rest of the group have to figure out whether to kill them or not I think this aspect works well in a horror film. Without this danger, a film seems too much like a comedy film and our idea in our trailer is to create a scary horror.

What was the best aspect/ more enjoyable moment in the film? Why? Can you recreate this in your own film? How? The end scene had the best aspect of action and horror as it builds tension well as the two girls come close to dying and Tallahassee also is surrounded by zombies and you are not quite sure whether he is going to survive or not. This scene would be very hard to recreate as I don’t think we could get that many people to do that scene and we don’t have a big budget for all the zombie make-up, but it would be possible to do a smaller scene with less people, but using the same amount of action and with less people we could do the zombie make-up.

Name of film: Toxic Avenger            Year Released: 1986

Genre of Trailer: Comedy horror      Your Mark: 6/10

The trailer starts off with a nerdy kid who gets bullied by all the ‘popular’ kids which becomes so bad to the point that he falls into toxic waste which causes him to turn into a monster and he becomes a hero and it shows clips of him beating up muggers.

The trailer has good edits one example is the scene where he changes into the monster. The whole thing about not seeing his face sucks the audience in and makes you want to go see the film. The narrative in the background clearly explains the story and gives the film more of a comedy look to it. There are parts that are restricted narration but you know that it will be shown the film.

Too much of the film was shown so you basically didn’t need to see the film and it was made it worse that the trailer was so long. Also the narrator says ‘you need to see the movie to see his face’ even though further into the trailer you see his face. It also lacked tension and suspense, which I think even though it’s a comedy horror it still needs the aspect of suspense to give more of a horror feel. I don’t think we would use any aspects of this horror trailer in our trailer.

Horror Trailer Analysis

Name of Film: Evil Dead                   Year Released: 2013

Genre of trailer: Horror                     Your Mark: 9/10

The trailer starts off with 5 characters going into a Cabin and one of the characters snoops around and reads this passage and causes evil to happen in the Cabin and forest.

The trailer is good as it shows a good amount of the film to get you wanting to watch it, and it has a lot of gore. The quick editing shows more scary parts to the film, along with the music which is really suspenseful. The low key lighting gives the trailer a good effect to scare people and to get the audience sucked into to the trailer making them want to go see the film. The best feature of the trailer is the creepy cabin that makes the trailer seem a lot creepier. Parts of this trailer that we would use in our trailer would be the gore but a bit less extreme.

The part of the trailer that was bad was the fact that it didn’t give a reason to why the people were in the cabin.

Horror Trailer Analysis (Solo): Ed Gein (2000)

Genre of trailer: Horror, Sci-Fi    Your Mark: 7/10

At the start of the trailer there a party being filmed with a handheld camera suddenly there is a big explosion causing everyone to go outside and some weird creature which you don’t get to see is destroying the city.

I thought this was a good trailer as it doesn’t tell you too much of the story but it gives you a big moment at the end to make the audience want to go see it just to know what it is that is destroying the city. The use of the handheld camera makes the film seem more real and give the audience a sense that they are in the film. I wouldn’t use this type of camera style for my trailer because I don’t think the handheld camera works well with an action horror. For our trailer we are doing a scene trailer so this helps to give us an idea of how good a scene trailer must be.

The trailer is good for an action film but it doesn’t show many aspects of a horror film and shows more of the action.

The trailer starts off by telling you that there has been a murder in this house just to give the audience an idea of why strange things are going to happen. It shows a happy family moving into the house where the murders were; things start to change when the dad finds a camera and a few home videos from the old owners of the house. The films show images of a weird creature that abducts children known as ‘Bughuul’.

This trailer shows all aspects of a good trailer as it doesn’t give you too much about the film but it gives you enough to make you want to watch it. It has a good soundtrack when creepy things start happening and then it builds up when the film has more action in it. I think it has good pacing as it goes from slow to fast then back to slow to keep building suspense and the camera movement is quick. There is a jump at the end which grabs the attention of the viewer making them want to go see the film even more just to find out what this creature is. What we could take from this and use in our trailer is there use of music because our horror trailer is going to have some action so using the sinister trailers idea of starting off with slow music then building it up would work well in our trailer.

A bad point from the trailer would be that I don’t think it focuses enough on the children even though the creature abducts them instead it focuses more on the dad and you don’t really get to see any of the other characters. In our horror trailer we will mainly focus on the main character Keith as that is the name of the film and mainly what it’s about but in sinister I think that they could have done it better by showing more of the other characters in the film.
